Variations in the game of handball is played worldwide by thousands of years. Known as one of the oldest ball games, handball was played in Egypt more four thousand years ago in ancient Rome, and many South American cultures.
The ancient Egyptians played a variety of ball games. The drawings of the Egyptian handball game decoration found five thousand years old tombs in Saqqara, which depict girls in teams of two in the game. Balls used in balls of Egypt were designed to be lightweight and durable – they were skin leather stuffed with hay or other vegetable fibers such as papyrus.
In the Roman Empire, the game was called ludere expulsim, and is played in tennis sphaeristas call. Alexander the Great is said to have been responsible for spreading the game among the Greek colonies in Italy in the first millennium BC and from there spread to other countries of the Roman Empire. The details of how the match was played at this time are sketchy, but is believed to be similar to what is known today as one wall handball.
In France during the Middle Ages, the game was called Jeux de Paume (palm game) and was popular among the nobility and peasants. The ball was made of laminated pieces of fabric sewn well, and as the game evolved gloves are used to allow stronger hitting the ball. This form Handball is thought to be a precursor to court – as the game developed in France, players began using gloves larger and larger, until finally they started using the elements that looked like tennis rackets early.
In the U.S., handball is more than three thousand years, and originated in Mexico. Handball players are represented on painted ceramics, sculptures and murals found in archaeological sites in many parts of Central America. Of the games played by these ancient civilizations, which most resembles modern handball is one heavy-handed rebounding the ball, or "Hardball ball bounced to the hand ". This game was played by Chichimec people in court measuring 20 feet by 40 feet. Many ancient ruins of Central American sites containing those courts, and together with the multitude of art that represents the game, indicates that it was an important part of the lives of these ancient cultures.
These days, handball is a sport each increasingly popular – has become part of the Olympics, and many international tournaments are dedicated to handball – not surprisingly, the Egyptian team is known to be very talented, perhaps because of all civilizations in the world who have been playing the longest!
